A solution of benzo[b]thiophen-3-one (20 g), 3-mercaptopropionic acid (25 ml), 2N hydrochloric acid (3 ml) in xylene (80 ml) was refluxed for 18 h. Water (100 ml) and ether (300 ml) were added and the phases separated. The ether phase was extracted with 150 ml 2N NaOH followed by acidification of the alkaline phase with conc. hydrochloric acid.
