The reaction of alkyl 4-(2-acetylhydrazino)-2-methyl-3- thiophenecarboxylates with 3-methylbutan-2-one was carried out under the Fischer reaction conditions. The influence of Lewis acids and solvents on the process was studied. A convenient method for the synthesis of thieno [3.2-b]pyrrolenine derivatives was proposed.

Novel organic dyes based on thioindigo for dye-sensitized solar cells

Abstract Two novel metal free organic dyes based on thioindigo were prepared and used as sensitizers in dye-sensitized solar cells. The synthesized dyes together with their corresponding intermediates were purified and characterized by analytical techniques. Such techniques confirmed the corresponding structures of dyes and their intermediates and the yield of all the stages of dye preparation were calculated to be above 75%. Fluorometric analyses show fluorescence in the red region of the visible spectrum for both dyes. Oxidation potential measurements for both dyes ensured an energetically permissible and thermodynamically favourable charge transfer throughout the continuous cycle of photo-electric conversion. Finally, dye sensitized solar cells were fabricated in order to determine the photovoltaic behaviour and conversion efficiencies of each dye. Such evaluations demonstrate rather high conversion efficiencies of 6.10% and 6.45% for such simple structured dyes 1 and 2, respectively.

Twisted Hemithioindigo Photoswitches: Solvent Polarity Determines the Type of Light-Induced Rotations

Controlling the internal motions of molecules by outside stimuli is a decisive task for the generation of responsive and complex molecular behavior and functionality. Light-induced structural changes of photoswitches are of special high interest due to the ease of signal application and high repeatability. Typically photoswitches use one reaction coordinate in their switching process and change between two more or less-defined states. Here we report on new twisted hemithioindigo photoswitches enabling two different reaction coordinates to be used for the switching process. Depending on the polarity of the solvent, either complete single bond (in DMSO) or double bond (in cyclohexane) rotation can be induced by visible light. This mutually independent switching establishes an unprecedented two-dimensional control of intramolecular rotations in this class of photoswitches. The mechanistic explanation involves formation of highly polar twisted intramolecular charge-transfer species in the excited state and is based on a large body of experimental quantifications, most notably ultrafast spectroscopy and quantum yield measurements in solvents of different polarity. The concept of pre-twisting in the ground state to open new, independent reaction coordinates in the excited state should be transferable to other photoswitching systems.

Making fast photoswitches faster – Using hammett analysis to understand the limit of donor-acceptor approaches for faster hemithioindigo photoswitches

Hemithioindigo (HTI) photoswitches have a tremendous potential for biological and supramolecular applications due to their absorptions in the visible-light region in conjunction with ultrafast photoisomerization and high thermal bistability. Rational tailoring of the photophysical properties for a specific application is the key to exploit the full potential of HTIs as photoswitching tools. Herein we use time-resolved absorption spectroscopy and Hammett analysis to discover an unexpected principal limit to the photoisomerization rate for donor-substituted HTIs. By using stationary absorption and fluorescence measurements in combination with theoretical investigations, we offer a detailed mechanistic explanation for the observed rate limit. An alternative way of approaching and possibly even exceeding the maximum rate by multiple donor substitution is demonstrated, which give access to the fastest HTI photoswitch reported to date. An unexpected principal limit to the photoisomerization rate for donor-substituted hemithioindigos (HTIs; see figure) has been discovered; this provides a quantitative estimate for the highest possible photoisomerization rate. A mechanistic explanation for the observed limit is offered together with an alternative way of approaching the maximum rate by multiple donor substitution. This approach gave access to the fastest HTI photoswitch reported to date.

A short and efficient synthesis of condensed 1,4-oxathiin-2-ones from easily available phenols is described. The key step in this synthesis is a hitherto unreported anionic rearrangement under directed metalation conditions. The rearrangement occurs after side chain deprotonation of a methyl sulfanyl group by an O-carbamate directed metalating group and the reaction mixture is kept at room temperature for 8-12 h. Acid-mediated cyclisation of the rearranged product affords [1,4]oxathiin-2-one.

Results of X-ray diffraction study and quantum-chemical calculations revealed that molecular conformation of thioindirubin molecule creates suitable conditions for formation of intramolecular C-H¡¤¡¤¡¤O and S¡¤¡¤¡¤O interactions. Analysis of molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) demonstrates existence of two areas of positive MEP (sigma-holes) in the outermost part of the sulfur atom on the continuation of the lines of the C-S bonds. One of these sigma-holes is oriented toward region of negative MEP around the oxygen atom of carbonyl group. Such situation corresponds to formation of sigma-hole or chalcogen bond. Energies of the C-H¡¤¡¤¡¤O hydrogen bond and the S¡¤¡¤¡¤O sigma-hole bond derived from AIM and NBO theories are very close.
