Modulation of aggregation-induced emission and electroluminescence of silole derivatives by a covalent bonding pattern

The deciphering of structure-property relationships is of high importance to rational design of functional molecules and to explore their potential applications. In this work, a series of silole derivatives substituted with benzo[b]thiophene (BT) at the 2,5-positions of the silole ring are synthesized and characterized. The experimental investigation reveals that the covalent bonding through the 2-position of BT (2-BT) with silole ring allows a better conjugation of the backbone than that achieved though the 5-position of BT (5-BT), and results in totally different emission behaviors. The silole derivatives with 5-BT groups are weakly fluorescent in solutions, but are induced to emit intensely in aggregates, presenting excellent aggregation-induced emission (AIE) characteristics. Those with 2-BT groups can fluoresce more strongly in solutions, but no obvious emission enhancements are found in aggregates, suggesting they are not AIE-active. Theoretical calculations disclose that the good conjugation lowers the rotational motions of BT groups, which enables the molecules to emit more efficiently in solutions. But the well-conjugated planar backbone is prone to form strong intermoelcular interactions in aggregates, which decreases the emission efficiency. Non-doped organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) are fabricated by using these siloles as emitters. AIE-active silole derivatives show much better elecroluminescence properties than those without the AIE characterisic, demonstrating the advantage of AIE-active emitters in OLED applications. Synthesis of novel 2-aminoimidazo[4,5-b]pyridines, including the thieno analogue of the cooked-food mutagen IFP

Eight new compounds, including three new ring systems obtained via the Friedlunder condensation of ortto-aminothiophenecarbaldehydes 11, 21 and 24 with creatinine (8), are reported. The condensation afforded 1, which is the thieno analogue of the cooked-food mutagen IFP (2-amino-1,6-dimethylfuro[2,3-e] imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine), and the benzothieno[2,3-e]- and benzothieno[3,2-e] imidazo[4,5-b]pyridines 2 and 3. Attempts to condense 11 with isocreatinine (12) were unsuccesful. Desulfurization of 3 gave the known cooked-food carcinogen PhIP, The 2-nitro (4) and 2-hydroxy (5) derivatives of 3 are reported. The related 2-amino-1-methyl-imidazo[4,5-b]benzothiophene (25) was synthesized by a different route. Fully assigned 1H and 13C nmr data of all new compounds are reported.

A new and improved synthetic method for BTTs was developed, which enabled the efficient realization of new BTT-based semiconductors. The crystal structure of BBTT was determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Within this family, BBTT, which had the largest conjugation of the BTT derivatives in this study, exhibited the highest p-channel characteristic, with a carrier mobility as high as 0.22 cm2 V-1 s-1 and a current on/off ratio of 1¡Á10 7, as well as good ambient stability for bottom-contact/bottom-gate OTFT devices. A highly efficient one-pot reaction of 2-(gem-dibromovinyl) phenols(thiophenols) with K4Fe(CN)6 to 2-cyanobenzofurans(thiophenes)

2-Cyanobenzofurans and 2-cyanobenzothiophenes were prepared through an efficient one-pot Ullmann-reaction/cyanation reaction. In the presence of CuI/Na2CO3-Pd(OAc)2/PPh3 in DMF, the reaction of 2-(gem-dibromovinyl)phenols and 2-(gem-dibromovinyl)thiophenols with K4Fe(CN)6, as non-toxic and user-friendly cyanating reagent, proceeded smoothly to generate the corresponding 2-cyanobenzofurans and 2-cyanobenzothiophenes in good yields.
